Hahn Estates Meritage 2005
Big and bold and intense. Black cherry, raspberry, and cedar aromatics with a whiff of allspice in the background. A lush collection of dark fruits: plum, blackberry, and blueberry open up the forepalate. As the flavors start to crescendo, there is a fairly seamless transition towards tannins at the back end. With a young wine, one might assume that these would turn bitter and green. But with a fairly large percentage of new French oak, the tannins stay dusty and restrained, gently tapering off as a pretty thread of acidity takes over and finishes with a little bright cherry note. If you fancy yourself an adventuresome chef, you can try this wine with either of these two lovely dishes that some fantastic chefs had prepared for me over the summer to pair with our Meritage: Roasted Sirloin with confit of summer vegetables and/or Shrimp and Chaurice Sausage over Escarole Penne pasta. Then again, if you actually cook like me, something a little simpler is in order. Barbequed spare ribs with the deepest, darkest marinade you can find. Customers who purchased this item also bought:
