Montes Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon 2005
One of the top Chilean Cabernets, aged for 12 months in French oak barrels. Intense ruby in color with red fruits evocations of blackcurrant, chocolate and cigar box, in balance with well-integrated oak (French Alliers fine grained oak). Of great complexity in the mouth, in mid palate is full bodied and balanced with a lasting persistence and a remarkable finish. Although a superb wine as it is, it may also be considered as a great wine for cellaring. Wine Spectator Delivers a juicy beam of graphite, licorice, sweet vanilla and crushed plum flavors, with the graphite edge hanging on the finish. Well done. Drink now through 2008. Score: 89. —James Molesworth, October 31, 2007.Wine Advocate The 2005 Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon has considerably more weight than the Merlot. The fruit is darker with a quality nose of cedar, leather, espresso, and black currants. The wine’s texture is supple and there is enough tannin to support 2-3 years of cellaring. This well-made Cabernet can be enjoyed through 2020. Score: 89. —Jay Miller, June 2007. Wine Enthusiast Starts out with subdued aromas of forest floor, black olive and pine needles before it bursts with black-fruit aromas. The palate is a bit heavy and sticky, but it houses legitimate cassis, black plum and berry flavors. A pure, serious Cabernet from a good vintage and a good region. Score: 89. —Michael Schachner, November 15, 2007.
