Longwood

The colour is rich magenta to Spartan red. The nose is of raspberries and boysenberries. There are underlying notes of licorice which become more pronounced the longer the wine is open. Fruit dominates the front of the palate. There's a great relationship between aromatics and flavours that are experienced on the palate. The flavours are a mix of ripe boysenberry, fresh raspberry and dark red fruits. It has typical McLaren Vale mid palate fullness. The flavors are nicely conveyed across the palate from front to back by fine silky tannins. Acidity keeps brightness and freshness through the palate and gives definition of flavor. In our experience this wine will benefit, as well as it's consumer from decanting prior to serving. It will cellar comfortably for 5 to 10 years.

Wine Advocate

Longwood's 2008 Reserve Shiraz was aged in a mix of new and used French and American oak for 17 months. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it offers up a brooding bouquet of Asian spices, incense, black raspberry, boysenberry, and blueberry preserves. Medium to full-bodied and mouth-filling on the palate, it is intense, concentrated, and layered with savory fruit. Long in the finish, it will drink well now through 2018.

Score: 91. —Jay Miller, December 2009.
