Austin Hope

Has a beautifully extracted, deep color. The wine offers deep, ripe aromas of blueberry and cassis, with subtle notes of smoked meat and scents reminiscent of the garrigue. Strong dark berry and spice flavors are nicely balanced by a high-toned minerality. The wine is well-balanced, with seamless tannins providing structure and elegance. The 2009 Austin Hope Syrah has a lush and rich mouth-feel and will age beautifully for the next decade.

Wine Enthusiast

This is a delicious wine. The blackberry and cherry jam, chocolate, anise and pepper flavors have a pie filling richness, complete with the smoky-sweet pastry crust. Yet it’s totally dry. Feels fine and distinguished, if a little hot in alcohol.

Score: 92. —Steve Heimoff, March 01, 2011.

Wine Spectator

Firm and chunky, with a smoky tobacco, roasted herb and scorched earth edge to the savory wild berry and blackberry flavors that are full-bodied and intense, ending with pleasantly chewy tannins. 810 cases made.

Score: 91. —James Laube, February 28, 2011.

Wine Advocate

The 2009 Syrah shows lovely richness and density in its dark fruit. Floral elements appear later, followed by mint, licorice and sweet spices, all of which add considerable complexity. This could use another year in bottle to drop some baby fat, but it is undeniably delicious. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019.

Score: 91. —Antonio Galloni, August 2011.
