Each Vintage is unique and interesting, at least to winemaker-types like us. 2009 was no exception. Unlike 2008 where sugars came on fast and we needed additional hang-time of grapes on the vine to develop colors and flavors, in 2009 we saw a much more harmonious ripening with sugars and flavors maturing together. We harvested at lower Brix (sugar in the grapes) and the ensuing wine balanced out at 14.6% alcohol, a full percent lower than the 2008 Chardonnay. After a lovely primary barrel-fermentation we inoculated half of the barrels for secondary Malo-Lactic fermentation. The bugs did some rather amazing production of a rich buttery flavor and adding to that a 10-month sur lies batonnage aging, we have come up with a very mouth-filling bottle of wine. The toasty oak spice and tropical and citrus Chardonnay varietal flavors typical of Northern Santa Barbara County have melded into an enjoyably complex libation with many layers of flavors.
