Epiphany Cellars

Our Gypsy blend has quickly become a favorite in the tasting room due to its approachable medium bodied palate, fresh fruit quality and smooth long finish. As we are happy to find, our 2007 vintage is beautifully living up to its predecessors' reputations!! The blend of the 2007 Gypsy is 47% Grenache, 22% Mourvedre, 19% Counoise, 10% Cinsault and 2% Syrah, which spent 22 months in a combination of 500L Puncheons and 228L Burgundy barrels (20% of which were new French oak). We were anxious to taste the result of this wine as we took out the small amount of Petite Sirah that we typically used and added a grape called Counoise, a rather unknown grape that brings beautiful elements to a red Rhone blend. Mostly touted as one of the 13 varietals allowed to grow in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape region, the Counoise grape is a great mediator of the other 4 grapes that we used in this year's Gypsy. The soft tannins and bright fruit of the Counoise help to balance the robustness of the Mourvedre and the strong spice and tannin of the Syrah while complimentaing the acidity and fruit of the Grenache and enhancing the perfume and bouquet of the Cinsault. The result is a dark garnet colored wine with intense fruit aromas of black cherry and strawberry compote along with hints of lavender, Herbs de Provence, black pepper and vanilla. On the palate, there are wonderful soft flavors of strawberry, Bing cherry, graham cracker, anise and a silky, long milk chocolate finish. As a perfect everyday wine, the 2007 Gypsy is a wonderful compliment to pot roast, polenta, pasta bolognaise and meatloaf.

Wine Advocate

The 2007 Gypsy (47% Grenache, 22% Mourvedre, 19% Counoise, and the rest Cinsault and other Rhone varietals) exhibits a lighter medium ruby color as well as lots of strawberry, cherry, pepper, and sandy, loamy soil notes. A California version of a French Cotes du Rhone, it is a charming, endearing red with a heady finish, and no hard edges. Enjoy it over the next 2-3 years.

Score: 89. —Robert Parker, August 2010.
