Water Wheel Vineyards Shiraz 2005
Round and fuller bodied this has a nice inflection of pepper that plays wonderfully off of its cherry and black berry fruit. Give this a few years and watch it really come together as we have noticed thru the years that a little bottle age really brings out the best in the Water Wheel Shiraz. Deep violet in colour with a bright purple hue. There are plum and liquorice aromas on the nose along with hints of oak. The palate is full and rich with plum and aniseed flavours dominating. The wine has great length and is well balanced with a persistent dry finish and fine tannins. It is ready to drink now and will continue to improve in the medium term. The palate is full and firm. There are plum and cherry flavours as well as some vanilla oak giving good mouth feel and balance. The tannin structure and integrated oak provide for a powerful and persistent finish. Whilst the wine can be consumed now it will cellar well in the medium term. A superb table wine, it is ideal for a wide variety of meat dishes. Wine Spectator The opaque purple 2005 Shiraz was aged for 9-12 months in a mix of new and used American hogsheads. It offers a multi-dimensional perfume of cedar, tobacco, plum, anise, blueberry, and blackberry. Full-bodied, stacked and packed, this mouth-filling Shiraz has enough structure to evolve for several years but delaying gratification will prove difficult. A barrel sample of the 2006 (which should be in the bottle prior to publication) appears to be equally good. Score: 90. —Harvey Steiman, June 15, 2007.
