Raats Dolomite Cabernet Franc 2015
|Region||South Africa, Stellenbosch|
Earthy tones of fresh tilled soil, licorice root and sweet char lead the bouquet of this wine, grounded by the ripe black-fruit core. Velvety in texture, yet somewhat firm in structure, the palate boasts flavors of ripe black cherry and berry that carry through to the finish alongside hints of curing spice and hickory smoke. Drink now-2021.
The 2015 Dolomite Cabernet Franc, which comes from lower-lying areas in Polkadraai and matured in fifth and sixth-fill barrels, has a punchy bouquet with smoke and Tuscan cured meat infusing the black and red fruit. There is lovely definition and vigor on display here. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, touches of bell pepper and oregano infusing the black fruit, with good backbone and structure on the finish. It needs to partnered with some hearty meat dishes to get the most out of this.
A bright, fresh tobacco leaf note streaks through the core of cherry and damson plum fruit. Light-bodied, with a racy finish that lets an olive accent chime in. Drink now through 2019. 1,200 cases made, 168 cases imported.
